Modular Fabrication Yard launched
SOHAR — The L&T Modular Fabrication Yard LLC (L&T MFY), a joint venture between Larsen & Toubro (L&T) of India and Zubair Corporation, was launched here yesterday. Rashad bin Mohammed al Zubair, Chairman of Zubair Corporation, said that the event coincides with the Sultanate’s celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Renaissance led by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. Al Zubair said L&T Modular Fabrication Yard is an industrial edifice that has been constructed as part of the strategic partnership between L&T of India and Al Zubair Corporation.
Although the Gulf region is abundant with oil wealth, oil industries in the Middle East are still budding. He pointed out that the unique merits of the Sultanate including its strategic location and the facilities available in Sohar Industrial Port, have created a conducive opportunity to set up a major industrial facility that manufactures the main equipment for oil and gas companies and other markets. This will in turn spotlight the Sultanate as one of the emerging countries in the field of heavy industries.
He also pointed out that the weight of the yard is 12,500 tonnes making it the biggest floating platform for oil extraction . It is also the first of its kind in South Asia including GCC countries. He noted that the fabrication processes at this project is labour intensive. Therefore it provides good opportunity for Omani youths who have clear cut strategy for self development, enhancing self capacities and promoting the professional skills.
A M Naik, Chairman and Managing Director of L&T (India), said that L&T MFY is the first of its kind in the country and will transform the region's capabilities for fabrication of offshore equipment for the oil and gas sector. “The venture will focus on sustainable growth of the Sultanate's economy in harmony with the environment and the community around us. Omanisation, therefore, is high on our agenda. Our emphasis on training is raising the skills of our Omani personnel to world standards", he added.
The facility occupy an area of 400,000 square meters at Sohar Industrial Zone. The launch ceremony was held at the Sohar Industrial Port under the auspices of Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, National Economy Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council. The ceremony was attended by senior officials. — ONA
